ANN: BITMAIN has Tested Its 28nm Bitcoin Mining Chip BM1382

Published on June 18th, 2014,

BITMAIN thinks forward and moves non-stop, and that is why BM1382 is beautifully here laying on the table now, only 7 months after we announced our BM1380 first to the world.

BITMAIN’s innovative realization of the SHA256 proof of work ASIC will continue to work hand in hand with the community, to protect the Bitcoin protocol successfully which is still at its baby stage in our eyes.

BM1382 has achieved 15.75 Gh/s in hash performance, consuming less than 9.33 W on chip level at 0.75V. This means 0.59 J/GH on chip. If the core voltage is at 0.63V, the efficiency will be 0.40 J/GH on chip. BM1382 will bring the power efficiency of Bitcoin mining industry to a new level which has not been massively achieved before.  BM1382 represents a 20% power saving on its previous generation of 55nm chips and nearly 10 times of better physical densification, which will further improve the safety of the decentralized ecosystem.

Chip specs: BM1382

Process Node: 28nm
Package Type: FCQFN-56
Packaged Chip Size: 8mm x 8mm
Number of Cores: 63
Core Voltage: 0.75 V
Core Frequency: 250 MHz
Hash Rate: 15.75 GH/s
Power Consumption: 0.59 J/GH (chip level, and it can be lower to 0.40J/GH by lowering the core voltage)

What BITMAIN has Contributed to the Community and What is Going on

Powering around 20% of the Entire Network Hash Rate

Since November of 2013, BM1380 has been proven to be the most effective IC on the 55nm process among all competitors, even comparable to the most Bitcoin Mining ICs developed on 28nm process nodes. Our first generation Bitcoin Miner, ANTMINER S1, proudly demonstrated the best combination of stability, power efficiency and hash rate. It uses the most power efficient mining chip at the time and utilizes custom design from the chip level to the mechanical level. S1’s heat sink allows for efficient heat removal at lower fan speeds, allowing the miner to operate more quietly. S1 has been among the most classical miner for mining enthusiasts as the stability being so impressive.  S1 and S2 together is currently deployed in large scale globally in both family and enterprise level mining farm, powering around 20% of the entire network hash rate.

On Time Delivery, if not Pre-Shipped

BITMAIN does have a good track record of doing business right. BITMAIN created a new standard of doing mining device business in the community. ANTMINER is the first ASIC mining equipment in the community that had provided certainty to our customers and taken all the risk of failure or delaying risk on ourselves. We collected payments later than lots of pre-sellers, but our clients get the miners earlier than most of the pre-order buyers.

As a philosophy, no over promise is easy to talk about but hard to think and act accordingly. Very soon, BITMAIN’s clients will be buying the best 28nm mining equipment on the market without risk of unacceptable shipping delays.

Sharing the Mining Profit with Our Customers

BITMAIN offers a fair price to distribute the future mining revenue between the mining community and us. BITMAIN is the first company doing spot price. Our pricing strategy is based on several factors:
1)   The projected difficulty growth rate. The difficulty growth is driven by the mining equipment investment and deploy, which are influenced by manufacture capacity, the hosting infrastructure, the Bitcoin exchange rate growth momentum. We make forecasts and adjust it from time to time, based on the updated information we get.
2)   Our production capacity. The higher our production capacity is, the more profit we can share with miners. Lots of supply chain management problems will influence the production, and the speed we build our equipment fluctuates.
3)   The shipping time. If the shipping date is different, the value of miners will be different. The earlier the shipping date, the more value of the miners.
4)   Our manufacturing cost. Selling under our manufacturing cost is not sustainable, and we sell at a price with a positive margin. BITMAIN used to provide the lowest $/GH on the market before S1’s production discontinued.
5)   We issue coupons from time to time.

Here is a chart showing the pricing, mining revenue and ROI history of S1. We can see that:
  • the most early adopters of S1 has the highest ROI (about 75%)
  • all S1 purchased before late March must have mined their investment back, and all S1 will have a positive ROI.

Assumption in the chart:
1)   The historical price is adjusted by the coupon we issued.
2)   The “Bitcoin mined” has already had the electricity cost deducted. We assume $0.12 per KWH and the exchange rates is the weighted daily price of the Bitstamp exchange.
3)   The S1 is assumed to run at 180GH/s, though most of our customers will do over clock to 190GH/s or higher.
4)   We assume the S1 will stop work when the output is less than electricity cost. However, some customers has already DIYing and lower the voltage to let S1 continue to compete with those 1J/GH level miners, which make the life of S1 longer than expected.

Next Generation of ANTMINER Product: S3

S3 is a blade style miner similar with S1, and two S3 hash blades share one control board.
Each ANTMINER S3 contains 32 BM1382 chips. It will be hashing at 504 GH/s while consumes about 390W from the wall. The overall efficiency is about 0.77 J/GH.
The design of heat sink is customized but it is compatible with the hashing board of S1. Hence we will be able to provide all the S1 buyers an option of upgrade.
We have added a box over S3 to control the air flow, and we use two fans so that each fan will be able to work at lower speed.

S3 Specs

Effective Hash Rate: 504 GH/s±5%
Power Consumption: 390 W on wall
Power Supply: 4 +12V DC input, PCI-e connectors
Power Efficiency: 0.77 J/GH on wall
Size:  331 mm x 137 mm x 160 mm (Dual blades assembled inside a box, including the fans)
Fans: Two 14038 fans mounted on both front and back ends.)
Operating Temperature: 0 °C to 35 °C
Complied with: FCC / CE
Network Connection: Ethernet

The above descriptions and specs are projected number and subjected to change before the sales open.

Stay Tuned about the S3 Sales

We will open the sales of S3 in about 3 days on BITMAINTECH.COM, and the early batch is expected to be delivered very soon. The sales price will be announced soon and it will support a very best projected life time ROI based on our model.

Reserved for Q&A and Updates

1. Will there be upgrade parts for S1 and S2?

Yes, there will be. But we still need to solve some production/testing problem before we finalize the plan and public it.

2. Will S3 be supporting P2pool?

Yes.

Updates:

1. The sales opening announcement and the final specs of S3: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=656461.msg7597300#msg7597300
2. The First Batch of AntMiner S3 runs out of stock. we are ready to start to sell the Second Batch of S3 at 22:00 pm on July 1st (UTM + 8 ), and drop the sales price to 0.74 BTC each with international shipping. The Second Batch is estimated to be delivered about 2-4 days after shipping of the First Batch of S3 for 0.75 BTC each, but still no later than July 20th.
3. The Third Batch of S3 sales price is dropped to 0.725 BTC each with international shipping, which will open sales at 22:00 pm on July 4th (UTM + 8 ). The Third Batch is most likely to be shipped before July 20th, but no more than one or two days delay may happen.

Still waiting for resolution on damaged & underperfoming S2 miners.

Still waiting to hear more about upgrade blades and what to do with old blades.

shall we brush all that under the rug and just focus on more sales asap??

E2A - after well over 100 confusing and often repetitive emails, Bitmain has very generously offered to send a replacement board, a replacement power board as well as some S2/S2 Upgrade exclusive compensation.

Sadly the S2 i bought with the compensation has arrived overheating with the fans cutting out at high RPM and the rig reaches 73-74C...

Replacement power board goes into post 'today' so hopefully that will solve the overheating issue.

i wonder how many different people answer the emails sent as Bitmain must be swamped with support requests etc, sometimes it seems as though the already answered questions get asked again & again.

Time to max out those outlets, I suppose.

I love the dual fans.  Great news for home miners that need a relatively quiet operation.

I think we can all agree..

Of course, the sale pricing is a big concern. eBay is about to be flooded with S1's. I can only speculate that the price of two of these units will be slightly more than the price of an S2. Who knows? We may be very pleasantly surprised.  Smiley

Either way BITMAIN, your timing couldn't have been better.

Let's see...504MH / 15.75 MH per chip = 32 chip...like 16 chips per blade...

Interesting...they could go to 1T without problems...IMHO...

Hopefully as Bitmain says the price will be within a ROI market.

Hopefully we will get some overclock specs soon as well - Anyone worked out what the possible max running speed could be for all chips ?

But pretty cool - S2 Upgrades to follow as well for July ? should be up to like 2Th/s ?

Thanks
